I have been talking to Duncan and one day, I came to a discussion about religious belief systems and stuff. We got into a big argument (Not angry but big discussion) and kinda got ourselves very angry haha. So now I want to talk to you guys about what you think about different religions and points. I first would like to ask you guys, what is really soooo bad to make you want to become a atheist? I do understand how shinto, Buddhism etc can be very stressful and consuming. But to me christianity (Baptist is which sect I am from) is not so stressful, time consuming and using of much money... I know how it is kinda hard to think that God told some humans many years ago to write a book about what God wants you to be like; I can understand how hard it is to believe that Jesus is actually the son of the real God and died for us and was perfect! but to me I don't really understand why someone would want to become atheist?! Do you have no conscience that you MAY actually go to Hell as we call it, an ever lasting place of doom where your soul will be tortured? Or is it just a dumb little belief and you don't mind if you go to Hell, so be it? I personally think that I myself not knowing that there would be a bible, could not just think of these stories that the bible has, I am not intelligent enough to be able to just think of these kind of miracles... I will also have to agree that Catholicism and Orthodox can be partially bad as they are still using indulgences and relics but Baptist or Protestantism does not do that as we believe it is wrong and false. If you have never read the Bible, I would recommend as a christian obviously to read it... It may have an effect, it may not; I believe that after reading it you should be partially changed but I do not expect a sudden hit. When my dad teaches Christianity to people it always is a long process that can take up to ten years or more! I would just wish that you would consider to reading the bible for yourself I do not want to offend anyone in this discussion, as a true Christian I just want to learn and know more about Atheism.

I don't think Orthodox church uses indulgences or absolution of sins. Although i am pretty sure it doesn't use(indulgences) that,i may be wrong since i am not the most pious of Orthodox Christians.

hahaha its about seven hours long -_- Then listen to it from 13:21, which is the part I linked you to. It lasts for about 13 minutes. Is it seriously that hard to understand something as simple as a video?

Well, its not the fact that we WANT to become Atheist. I didn't say one day "Hey, I think being Atheist will be fun. I'm gonna do that." Usually, Atheists become Atheist by simply not believing what the religious scriptures say. That's all there is to it. We just don't believe in God.
I'm offended that you suggest that we have no conscience. Here is my view on it; for a all-knowing, loving, and caring God, why would hell even exist? If he loves all of his "children", why does he send them to hell? For punishment? No, hell is not punishment. Hell is eternal torture and would not solve anything. We don't believe in a hell, so threats of it don't affect us. If it turns out we are wrong, and we do go to hell, well yes, so be it. I'd rather burn in hell than worship a God that sends people there.
So, what you're saying, is that intelligent people made up the miracles. Doesn't that prove our point that religion is made up? Basically, any intelligent person could make up these miracles, or better ones, and thus we have a religion.
By the way, most Atheists become Atheist by reading the Bible in the first place. Re-reading it won't change their mind.

i am a Catholic. I'm not the most pious person out here believe me, but i think that most Catholics and other Christian groups believe in God not just because we are afraid of hell but because most of us want to make a difference. The new testament is what separates us from a lot of other religions because we are supposed to be kind, helpful, and forgiving. I personally believe in God because i would like to believe that there is a God who watches and protects the innocent and that does punnish sick bastards like rapists and child molesters. The new testament is also where we can ask for forgiveness, William. That is what makes it so that we don't have to go to hell. There is no one who hasn't sinned at least once in their life; its in human nature. We ask forgiveness from God and we believe that he will forgive us. A lot of people are scared of what will come after death, i think almost everyone is. I take comfort in the fact that their is an afterlife and that everything i have accomplished in this life will not just be "a blip on the radar". I am different from many Catholics though because i believe in many of the old Testament, so in a way, like a Jew.(lol) I also believe in reincarnation, which is frowned upon. Reincarnation makes a lot of sense when you think about it, and i have seen some damn wierd things in my short 15 years to make me believe in it.
Sorry for that long slightly out of balance shpeel but i wanted to make my point across. I don't care a lot who is athiest or not, i will pray for them all the same. Because (not bible) All men are Created Equal.

I'm honestly just not interested in religion at all/it all just seems too fanciful for me lol. I don't have anything against anyone's religious beliefs at all as long as it doesn't infringe upon my life/the way I choose to live my life. Again, I'm fine with people choosing to believe in anything they choose to believe in, and I don't assume I'm right and you're wrong; I'm indifferent.
The main reason I don't believe in religion of any sort is because I do not believe in "souls"; my personal belief is that humans are nothing more than pieces of organic material and "souls" are inventions of our own minds that were used thousands of years ago to explain things that couldn't be understood that modern science can now explain. But that's just what I think and I don't mind if you think I'm wrong, because who knows.
I'd also like to include that I am technically a baptized Catholic, but my family does not believe in religion oddly enough. I guess it was a decision based on tradition.

@ottiger Reincarnation is all fine and dandy, except that where do all the extra souls come from? Does God have a soul bank and a soul print? Also all men were not always created equal. Slavery existed, and apparently God forgot about it... Later it has of course been amended. My personal opinion is that a group of people sat down together and created religion as a way to control primitive people. And we're just barely out of the jungle on this planet. Note, not calling every religious guy primitive, but anyone who blindly follows what is said by God and his henchmen is indeed very primitive. Critical thinking is always needed to avoid mistakes. (By the way, critical thinking is the exact thing that leads you to atheism.)
