I'm having a really tough time trying to create a World Map on the computer. I can draw one, for sure, but I need it to be computer based for reasons.
The main problem I have is when I try to draw one using Paint.Net or any other program like that, the pixels sometimes line up in a straight line, which is fairly noticeable and unrealistic. I know I can't get it perfect on a computer, but ~100 Kilometer stretch of of a perfectly straight line seems a bit weird.
I've also tried so called free map generators. The problem with this is that I can't edit it, so if I don't like it, I have to scratch it completely and get a fresh map. As it turns out, I hardly get what I want from these.
So, my question is, have any of you found and good techniques or programs that allows you to create a map on the computer? Preferably, I would like to be able to edit it.

Oh, and I know about ProFantasy, which has great programs. The problem is I don't want to spend $40 dollars on something I'm going to use once or twice a year.

Alas, the trials I have gone through! I am very familiar with your problem, and short of spending the mentioned $40, I haven't found a good solution (besides hand drawing a map then scanning it to the computer).

Yeah, I considered scanning hand drawn maps, but the main problem with that is on the computer it has trouble recognizing the different color pixels. I'm not good at trying to color or make pictures transparent when they're in a jpeg format.

I found Fractal Mapper 8.0. Its $6.00 $5.00 cheaper. \o/ Seriously, why do they want so much for these products? Edit: Coupons make it ~$28.00. I don't think that justifies it yet. I think $20.00 would be a price I can buy a product like that to be honest.
